Vail Ski Holidays

Vail Ski Resort in Colorado’s Eagle County is the largest single-mountain ski resort in the US, designed and purpose built in 1962 as a skiing centre in an uninhabited valley at the foot of Vial Mountain. Since its opening, it’s become known as the number one ski resort in North America, giving world-class experiences from ski school through to expert runs beneath its three-hundred-day a year azure skies. Visitors familiar with European ski resorts will note the similarity of Vail to many picturesque Alpine resorts, in spite of its relatively recent construction. Unsurprisingly, the resort was modelled on a typical traditional Bavarian mountain village and has largely retained its charm over the years.

Vail Mountain is divided into three areas, Front-Side, the Back Bowls and the Blue Sky Basin, with most of the terrain wide open and offering groomed trails suitable for all levels of skill from beginner to expert. Cruising runs to Back Bowls are found at the heads of most Blue Sky Basin and Front-Side lifts, with moguls, chutes and glades in the Northwoods area and cornices in Blue Sky Basin. Base elevation here is at 2,470m, topping out at 3,530m and a vertical of 1,050m. The skiable area covers 5,289 acres with seven official bowls, and holds 193 runs in total, graded as 53 per cent advanced, 29 per cent intermediate and 18 per cent beginner. The longest run on the mountain is Riva Ridge at just under six and a half kilometres.

Vail resort has three terrain parks and one super pipe, accessed by 34 lifts in total, comprising 10 surface pulls, five double chairs, three triples and one slow quad, with 14 high-speed quads and a 12 person gondola completing the picture. The town of Vail has grown up around the resort since its opening and now provides a wide choice of accommodation, restaurants, bars, and après-ski venues as well as ski shops and further winter sports options. Denver International Airport is the closest major air hub at a distance of 170kms, with nearby Eagle County Airport providing a few domestic flights and a shorter transit time of 20 minutes to the resort.
