Apres-ski in Jackson Hole

Jackson Hole’s plethora of après-ski venues seems to cover at least the same area as the pistes themselves, with everything ranging from mellow to mind-numbing spreading out from Teton Village across the valley, through Jackson town and as far as Moose. A new concept a few years ago, wine bars are now hot here with locals as well as visitors, set up as cosy in winter and cool in summer. Old Yellowstone Garage only stocks wines made by friends who run a vineyard in Italy, and the more upbeat Rendevous Bistro offers great food as well as a fully-stocked bar.

A local institution, Dornan’s, with its stunning views of the Rockies, is a lively bar and restaurant and the Snake River Brewery’s the place for St Patrick’s Night and New Year, toned down only slightly for the other 363 days. Country and Western fans head for the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar in Jackson’s square, with free line dancing lessons included in the fun. The Log Cabin Saloon features stuffed wildlife on the walls and in the rafters as well as cheap, strong drinks, while Shady Lady is noise central with rock, funk, reggae and other totally unidentifiable sounds.

The pride of the nightlife here is the famous Mangy Moose Saloon, open all day and most of the night and featuring bands you’ve actually heard of – at least if you’re American. Nationally and locally famous musos play here, contributing to the Moose’s reputation as the ‘Best Apres-Ski Bar in North America’.
