Jackson Hole Ski Holidays

Located in beautiful Teton Village 19kms from the Wyoming city of Jackson, the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, known for its steep terrain, is comparable in size to the smaller Alpine resorts in Europe. Its vertical drop of 1,262m is one of the highest in North America and the ski area is set along the slopes of two mountains, aptly named Apres Vous and Rendezvous. Locals who’ve been skiing the, mostly challenging, area all their lives rate the runs as 50 per cent expert, 40 per cent intermediate and 10 per cent beginner.

Apres Vous mountain has most of the upper-intermediate runs, with Rendezvous holding the advanced terrain full of chutes, bowls and glades as well as the largest continuous in-bounds rise in America and over 1,300 vertical metres of skiing surface. Jackson Hole draws a high number of the sport’s best-known free skiers, both for the in-bounds runs and the even larger area of out-of-bounds off-piste terrain, accessible through marked gates and requiring avalanche safety gear. Jackson Hole’s pride is the world-famous, expert ski run of Corbet’s Couloir.

At present, the ski area is served from Teton Village base by 14 lifts, comprising a handle tow, a ski carpet, two each of fixed doubles and triples, four fixed and two detachable quads, an eight-person detachable gondola and a 100-person aerial tram. The base stations are at 1,923m and the highest elevation is 3,185m, with the longest run measured at just over seven kilometres and a total in-bounds skiable area of over 2,500 acres supported by 3,000 acres of out-of-bounds back-country skiing.

Jackson Hole is well-equipped for other forms of winter sports, including snowboarding, cross-country skiing, dog-sledding, snowshoeing, snowmobiling and skating. Almost the only downside here is the possibility of in-bounds avalanches, with several fatalities over the last three years increasing safety concerns as well as awareness at the resort. Teton Village has seen a good deal of development over the last few years, adding a better choice of hotels from cosy to upscale, rental condos and homes, restaurants and apres-ski haunts, with an increased number of visitors arriving as a result.
