Tignes Ski Holidays

Set in the French Alps at the southern tip of the Haute Tarentaise Valley close to the Italian border, Tignes is twinned with equally famous Val d’Isere, forming the celebrated Espace Killy, one of the world’s greatest ski areas. The resort opens for its winter season at the end of November and runs till as late as May. However, one of the glories of Tignes is that almost year-round skiing is possible on the beautiful Grande Motte Glacier, helped by a battery of 113 snow cannons. Skiing in Tignes offers a great experience at all levels, with endless pistes scattered across a huge area, but is most appreciated by experts for its hair-raising off-piste options and black runs.

The resort is set above Val d’Isere, and is snow-sure, a comforting thought for those only able to indulge their passion once a year. Generally, the area isn’t as pretty as its upscale neighbour, nor is it as expensive. Most of the accommodation is on snow and close to the lifts and, although some visitors may be less than thrilled by the 1970s-style apartments, facilities here provide everything skiers need. The resort contains several small villages, with Val Claret the highest at 2,100m. Lakeside Le Lac is the next highest, with the two forming the heart of the resort, most of the accommodation and the liveliest après-ski scene.

The high peaks and slopes form a bowl around the resort, headed by Grand Motte Glacier, making the vast area one of the world’s best for lift-served off-piste runs. A total of 47 lifts including two underground funiculars serve the trails, although some are older and slower, causing queues in peak season. Split into four areas, Tignes offers 150kms of pistes, plus vast off-piste areas, graded to favour the more experienced or expert skier, with challenging black runs as well as cruising runs great for intermediates. The glacier has a fine choice of blues and there is an improvement area dedicated to the less expert skier. Unlike its glamorous neighbour, Val, Tignes wears its purpose on its straightforward and practical sleeve, drawing serious skiers to return to its slopes year after year.
