La Plagne weather and snow conditions

The high peaks of the French Alps create their own microclimates in which changes in the weather can happen astonishingly quickly. The region isn’t affected by depressions rolling in from the Atlantic Ocean, with its weather patterns arising from both directions and benefiting early and late season visitors.

Snow cannons are strategically placed in case of a low-snow period but, in general, snow coverage is good.

On La Plagne’s mostly north and northwest-facing higher trails snow conditions are mostly uniform throughout the season, although early spring Fohn winds along the sheltered slopes may destabilise the surface, increasing the risk of avalanches. Temperatures can rise dramatically at this time, but the changes rarely last more than a day or so. Snowstorms can roll in at high speed, announced by heavy cloud formations over the highest peaks and seeping swiftly down the slopes. Weather watching is essential for safe skiing, especially off-piste.
