Après-ski in Alpe d’Huez

A selection of more than 30 bars, restaurants and clubs in the resort cater for the lively après-ski scene at all levels, from economy to splurge, augmented by events such as the weekly classical music concert, January’s film festival and December’s ice-driving contest. For those with unlimited energy, the Palais de Sports and the ice rink, covered by the lift pass, are best after the lifts close. Supper options range from the brilliant Au P’tit Creux to the fantastic value of Au Grenier. Pizza ‘n pasta fans will find Italian eateries almost anywhere and, for the seriously starving, Smithy’s Tavern serves massive helpings of Tex-Mex and good beer. For mountain restaurants, as a general rule, those in the Vaujany and Oz areas are cheaper but just as good as elsewhere.

Peak season is the best for frantic nightlife, with the bars and the four nightclubs in town getting going by the late hours. Several chalet hotels have basic British bars aimed at the younger crowd, while the Grotte du Yeti, with its live music, and Smithy’s get rowdy after midnight. Sports fans should head for Etalon, Free Ride or Underground – all three run sports videos in a cheery atmosphere, with the Zoo being the place for a relaxed drink or two. Sporting hosts class bands, but is fiendishly expensive.
