Restaurants in North Cyprus

If a variety of tasty food is a requirement of your summer holiday then the restaurants in North Cyprus are unlikely to disappoint.  Over the centuries the little island has been invaded and inhabited over and over again and this has left behind a delicious mix of cuisines and flavours.  Perhaps unsurprisingly, the dominant style is now Turkish Cypriot but you are also likely to come across many other influences from all over Europe and Asia.  Some of the dishes you will find at restaurants all across North Cyprus include pilaf, soups, kebabs, mezes of many different types, kofte, dolma and for desert super sweet pastries and local specialities such as lokma (deep fried honey or syrup covered delicacies), katmer (cream filled pastries), Ceviz Macunu (green walnuts in syrup) and Turunc Macunu (oranges in syrup).

If you are looking to sample these traditional Turkish-Cypriot type meals then your best option is a traditional restaurant.  Make sure you go hungry though because the volume of food you are likely to have set down in front of you could take several hours to get through!  In terms of price, traditional restaurants also tend to be the most reasonable – as most of the ingredients will have been grown or caught locally there’s no need for restaurateurs to bump up the price to cover the cost of paying for imported food.  At a traditional Turkish-Cypriot restaurant you will also be introduced to some of the famous North Cyprus hospitality, which is an essential part of the experience. Güler’s Fish Restaurant is a great option if you’re based in Kyrenia and is considered the best fresh fish place in the area.  Efendi’s House also in Kyrenia serves up local fare in its courtyard under the shade of a giant apricot tree and The Garden Restaurant, Bahceler Iskele use vegetables grown in their own garden as well as an excellent selection of local meat and fish.

Sometimes on holiday all you want is a quick meal and North Cyprus is well equipped to offer that with a selection of fast food restaurants.  You probably won’t be able to find big brands like KFC, Macdonalds and Pizza Hut but this hasn’t stopped the locals developing equally satisfying alternatives.  Kebabs are probably the best local fast food and will outdo anything your local kebab house at home could provide you with.  There’s also a wide selection of pizzas, burgers and sandwiches on offer – for example try Burger City restaurants in Karaoglanoglu, Nicosia and Famagusta for a typical burger chain style menu.

If you’re looking for the kinds of tastes you wouldn’t normally associate with North Cyprus then you’ll also have no problem finding restaurants to suit.  North Cyprus has a number of highly rated Indian restaurants, including Rafters in Karakum and East Meets West tucked away in the back streets of Kyrenia.  There are also some excellent Italian restaurants, like Lucianos in Kyrenia, and a selection of Chinese restaurants too, like Dragons Chinese Restaurant at the Rocks Hotel.  Most restaurants will welcome families and many offer family style menus with smaller portions of certain foods especially for children.  North Cyprus also has some really special dining experiences that match up to the most sophisticated and stylish restaurants in Europe – try The Ambiance right next to the sea in Karaoglanoglu or Efendi’s in Kyrenia for a stylish night out.
