North Cyprus Holidays

Once regarded as a pretty unusual holiday destination, North Cyprus has now become an extremely popular Mediterranean summer holiday option.  The reasons for such a rise in the popularity of North Cyprus holidays range from the miles of unspoilt, picturesque coastline, to the excellent opportunities for getting involved in all kinds of watersports, as well as the fabulous food.  It also doesn’t hurt that the local currency is the Turkish Lira, so a holiday to North Cyprus can be significantly more purse-friendly than some other European destinations.

Whilst the northern part of Cyprus does have a reputation for being far less touristy than Spain or Greece, that doesn’t mean there’s a shortage of facilities or luxury.  North Cyprus is well equipped to deal with holidaymakers of every kind, from families looking for an action packed beach holiday, to couples looking for something romantic and chic.

Historically, North Cyprus was once given to Queen Cleopatra by Julius Caesar as a token of his love and has been invaded by everyone from the Persians to the Romans.  As a result it is an area drenched in history with some fantastic historical buildings that are definitely worth dragging yourself away from the island’s beautiful beaches for.  One of the best loved is St. Hilarion castle on Mount St. Hilarion near Kyrenia, which is said to be the inspiration for the Disney castle.

North Cyprus holidays can also offer some exclusives in terms of activities.  If you are a keen diver, the area has some of the best diving in the Mediterranean, with high visibility, plenty of marine life and clear waters.   You can also get involved in watersports of all sorts, from parasailing, to snorkelling and windsurfing.  On dry land, North Cyprus has some of Europe’s best Go-Carting tracks, as well as paintballing centres and ten pin bowling lanes, and the island is a popular hiking destination.  There’s also the option to get involved in paragliding, which is a very popular activity.

Accommodation in North Cyprus is plentiful and varied.  The two best-known resorts are Famagusta and Kyrenia where you’re likely to find the biggest range of hotels, apartments and villas.  Both towns are well populated with restaurants serving up everything from mouth-watering fresh fish to indulgent patisserie, catering to most tastes and budgets.  Nightlife on the island also centres around these two destinations and whilst this area may not have clubs to rival Ibiza, there’s plenty of places where you can dance the night away in some pretty spectacular surroundings.
