Lanzarote remains a favourite holiday destination for British tourists, but in recent years the island’s share of the travel market has been ebbing away – but this year could see a reversal in fortunes.

Recent events have led many families to consider not just their wallets, but where can be regarded as a safe destination for a family holiday, with islands like Lanzarote being favoured to destinations which were doing well because they were relatively cheap.

Morocco, one of the cheap holiday destinations promoted by many of the tour operators, was the first to experience civil unrest this year, and before long Egypt too saw her citizens on the streets demanding reform.

And while the protests worked, with the President having to step down, the scenes of revolution on British television screens quickly had people looking online for holidays in Lanzarote instead of Morocco and Turkey, judging it better to be safe than sorry no matter what the price differential might be.

Although not affected directly by the protests, Turkey too has seen a drop in the number of people deciding to visit – again benefitting more established tourist destinations such as Lanzarote, with this year expected to be a good one and the Lanzarote hotels having a boost in occupancy.

The number of bargains available for Turkey on many of the tour operator travel sites is a clear reflection of the shift away from what many people see as a troubled region, and if potential holidaymakers look at a map of Turkey, borders with Syria, Iraq and Iran could be enough to persuade them elsewhere.

So if safety is a factor that many people are taking into account due to uprisings and unrest, it’s no surprise that Lanzarote holidays will benefit as Spain and her islands are considered safe destinations by many British tourists – in a poll recently conducted by a leading travel site Spain topped the list of destinations regarded as safe.

In other figures to encourage the holidays in Lanzarote industry, leading online travel agency On the Beach have revealed that seven of its top ten destinations for this summer are on the Spanish mainland and the islands – further evidence that this year should be a very good one for the country.

Lanzarote is sixth on their list of popularity, with the Balearic Islands of Majorca and Ibiza plus fellow Canary Island Tenerife above them, with Portugal’s Algarve also doing well – helped along by ther popularity of Algarve villa holidays.

Lanzarote and Tenerife have the advantage over the other top destinations of being well known as all year round, and not reliant on the summer season. The Canary Islands are popular with tourists in the winter, when often the weather in Lanzarote for example is sunny and in the 70’s farenheit.

Popular resorts year round include Puetro del Carmen, which has a four mile long promenade and a good beach, Costa Teguise along with the resort when you look at a Lanzarote map which is often regarded as upmarket is Playa Blanca, which again has a good beach plus the opportunity to take a day trip on a ferry to neighbouring Canary Island Fuerteventura. It’s also popular with those who are looking to book Lanzarote villa holidays.
